Polar Opposites Attract?
POLAR OPPOSITES ATTRACT
Do polar opposites attract? You tell me! If you haven’t already, you’re probably going to date a decent amount of people in your life. Finding your partner in crime is a tough gig, and most of us aren’t lucky enough to marry our high school sweetheart, so the search for that perfect someone is on. Some of these relationships are going to be good, some of them are going to be bad. For me, most of them were bad, but I learned something new from each experience, and I can’t say that I regret any decisions I’ve made. (Okay, maybe a few…)
Whether or not you’ve given up on a specific sex, or you’re stuck on maintaining a mundane connection with the same personality, you should try your luck with someone that’s so far out of your comfort zone that it’s scary to consider. I’m serious! I tried it, and I thank God every single day that I did because I found the love of my life by doing so. It’s definitely not for everyone, and it’s far from easy by any means, but it could potentially sculpt your individuality, make you healthier, expand your horizons, and to put it simply, make you a better person.
ENTERTAINMENT THAT YOU’VE NEVER SEEN/HEARD
Let’s start small. You’re sitting at home on your favorite comfy chair looking for something to watch. You almost check out this new show that everyone is talking about, but you decide to watch a movie that you’ve already seen. Sounds pretty boring to me. Say goodbye to your typical Friday night, and hello to a whole new universe of different! Dating polar opposites will introduce you to so many new things that you won’t know what to do with yourself.
Your Pandora playlist filled to the brim with 90’s punk bands is probably great, but a random collection of Drake or Beyonce tracks on Spotify that your opposite puts together for you could be incredible! You and your Netflix account are borderline inseparable, and you love watching Mel Brooks films, but your opposite throws on HBO Go, and makes you watch Game of Thrones. You absolutely love it! Go figure.
FACING YOUR FEARS
What are you afraid of? Odds are your opposite will not share the same fears as you, so you best be prepared to tackle most of the obstacles you’ve purposely placed in front of you. This is a good thing! Maybe you’re terrified of roller coasters because the height and speed make you woozy. Polar opposites could be the ones that soften the blow, and maybe even make it fun like it was intended to be.
Your fear is money, and how easy it is to spend. You’re not exactly experienced in the financial department. Hell, you’re hardly an amateur, and you know it. Dating your opposite could flip your spending habit into an addiction to save. Who doesn’t love commas? Spiders? No problem! The outstanding courage of your opposite, and of course the bottom of their shoe, will solve a situation like this in record time. Unless you’re both scared of creepy crawlies, then you’re screwed. Sorry.
DEBATE, DEBATE, DEBATE, & MORE DEBATING
I don’t know about you, but I love debating about as much as I love arguing. Yes, they’re different. There’s a nearly endless amount of topics, and ways to get under peoples skin if you have facts to back up your apparent knowledge. Religion. Politics. Very touchy subjects, I know, but there’s no reason why you and your opposite can’t discuss your differences in a civil manner. You can learn so much from someone simply by attempting to understand or relate.
I can’t tell you how many times Steph and I have gone toe to toe on things we do or don’t believe in. Near the beginning of our relationship, I refused to listen to the reasoning behind her beliefs/disbelief’s, and it sickens me now that I realize how shallow I was before we started dating. She’s really opened up my eyes. This is something that could come to fruition with you and your opposite as well. It all really depends on how much effort you’re willing to put in. In the end, positive or negative, you could both end up with completely different perspectives.
THE DEEPEST OF CONNECTIONS
So polar opposites attract. They really do. We got that out of the way, now let’s focus on how magical it can be. It’s really easy actually. All you have to do is care. You’re paying attention, listening carefully, focusing on his or her lips, carefully repeating the words in your head, and attempting to understand this beautiful, yet mysterious being before you. You’re terrified of change, but are slowly unraveling as you fall deeper and deeper into a state of paralysis. The numbness increases as the two of you mutually agree that you’re falling in love. It’s an unfamiliar feeling, but a feeling you never want to lose.
Scratch all the fears, movies, music, and late night debates. What’s the point of all that if you can’t share intimacy with your partner? This is one of the most important things when it comes to a successful relationship, polar opposites or not. If you are truly, downright, crazy in love, pay attention to each other. Appreciate the little things as much as you do the big things, and be honest to one another. If you find your lovers imperfections as attractive as their personalities and good looks, then you’re about as lucky as they come.
Honesty + Passion = Security.
Don’t lose touch of who you really are, but always remember that you might not have yourself figured out just yet. One day, someone might come into your life when you least expect it, that makes you think, act, and feel completely foreign. Maybe you’re pretending to be someone you’re not, just to be impressive and get what you want, or maybe this version of you is who you were always meant to be, but never had an opportunity to know for sure.
Whatever the case may be, do what makes you happy, and that happiness will continue to blossom in your life!
